Plastic bags and our waterbodies

One of the Gulf of Maine Institute teams in Massachusetts is assisting in working toward elimination of plastic bags from the waste/litter/ocean pollution stream. We have had some effort toward this in the Yarmouth area but we are not being very successful. Plastic bags account for a high amount of litter and do pollute our streams, waterways and near-shore environment.

A reminder that you can help to be part of the solution. Bring your own bags and boxes when shopping. When you do get a plastic bag make sure it is properly recycled.

Here are the information sheets being used in Massachusetts. The data is for the U.S. but it is easy to extrapolate  it to Canada. We all share the Gulf of Maine, the Atlantic Ocean and the atmosphere.
